The Black Authors and Readers Rock Weekend (BARR)
Celebrates Their Fifth Year
Bowie, MD: On October 14 and 15, the fifth annual Black Authors and Readers Rock Weekend (BARR) a literary networking conference, will be held at The Comfort Inn of Bowie. County Executive Rushern Baker, III, will welcome the attendeees.
BARR brings authors and readers together to celebrate the written word of the often overlooked and underrated black author.
This year, BARR has partnered with a local non-profit, community-based organization, "Love by the Handles, which serves individuals in transition. Attendees are urged to bring their donations of gently used purses or cell phones AND to place a small inspirational book in the purse, to help support the organization.
Through BARR, Sharon Lucas, a local author and Planner of the event, continues her journey to encourage reading in Prince George's County. Mrs. Lucas, who leads two local book clubs, is also the co-founder of the Prince George's Spring Book Festival, held annually at the Wayne Curry Sports & Learning Center.
The Author Expo will feature 25 authors, including NAACP Image Award winners Pamela Samuels Young and Dwayne Alexander Smith, and the Style Maven, Tia Williams. Participating authors come from the local area and from as far away as California. The conference includes panel discussios and workshops aimed at expanding the knowledge of the discernng reader and fledging author.
The Saturday keynote speaker, Lisa Renee Johson, is an author and the president of the California book club escorted off the Wine Train for laughing too loud.
